Aussie Burgers
This recipe guides you through making traditional Australian burgers, a substantial meal often enjoyed for lunch. You will prepare seasoned beef patties and assemble them in toasted buns with a distinctive combination of toppings including fried egg, bacon, cheese, beetroot, pineapple, lettuce and tomato. The process involves cooking the patties, frying the bacon and eggs, and caramelising onion rings before building the burgers. The result is a hearty, flavourful burger that serves four people.
Ingredients
- 500 g lean ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon steak seasoning
- salt and pepper
- 40 g butter
- 2 large onions, cut in thin rings
- 4 slices cheese
- 4 eggs
- 4 slices bacon, rind removed
- 4 large hamburger buns, halved
- shredded lettuce, for serving
- 1 large tomatoes, sliced
- 4 large pickled beets, sliced, drained (out of tin)
- 4 pineapple rings, drained
- ketchup, for serving
Method
- In a bowl, mix the lean ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, steak seasoning, salt and pepper by hand until well combined.
- Separate the mixture into four equal portions and form each one into a round patty shape.
- Melt 1/2 of the butter in a pan, add the thin onion rings and cook them until they are browned, then drain and set aside to keep warm.
- Preheat a skillet or grill, lightly brushing the cooking surface with oil.
- Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side or until done, then place a slice of cheese on top of each one.
- As the patties cook, melt the rest of the butter in another skillet and fry the eggs and bacon until they are cooked to your liking.
- Lightly toast the halved hamburger buns and place the bottom halves on your serving plates.
- On each bun base, layer shredded lettuce, a tomato slice, sliced beetroot, a pineapple ring, then the meat patty, followed by the onion rings, bacon, a fried egg and finally the bun top.
- Offer additional ketchup for serving.
- Serve immediately for the best experience.
