Anna's Ginger Beer
This homemade ginger beer is a zesty and refreshing drink, ideal for warm weather. It features a syrup made from fresh ginger and optional chilli, which is then mixed with sparkling water. The result is a lively beverage with a spicy note, served chilled over ice with a garnish of lime. It takes just 10 minutes to prepare before chilling.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cup water
- 1 3 inch piece fresh ginger, unpeeled and sliced
- 1 chilli pepper, such as jalapeno (optional)
- 1 lime, cut in half
- 3 cups sparkling water or club soda
- Lime slices, for garnish
Method
- Place the sugar, water, ginger, and chilli pepper if you are using it into a medium sauce pot and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Take the pot off the heat and allow the syrup to cool completely. Once cooled, strain to remove the ginger and chilli, then refrigerate the syrup until you need it.
- Just before serving, combine the chilled syrup with the sparkling water or club soda. Serve the ginger beer poured over ice, with a slice of lime for garnish.
