This baked spaghetti is a cherished family dinner that is wonderfully straightforward to make. The key ingredient is ricotta cheese, which adds a rich, creamy flavour distinct from lasagne. You can prepare it with or without the included mini meatballs. It serves 6 to 8 people and takes about 50 minutes from start to finish.

5 Star Baked Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces spaghetti noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup pre-shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon italian seasoning

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients for the meatballs and shape them into small balls roughly 1.5 inches in diameter.
  2. Boil the meatballs in an inch of water until cooked through, turning once. Set them aside. Begin heating your oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Cook the spaghetti noodles in boiling water until they are nearly al dente, then drain them.
  4. In a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, spread the tomato sauce, garlic powder and ricotta cheese.
  5. Add the drained spaghetti to the dish and mix everything together thoroughly.
  6. Place the cooked meatballs and the jar of spaghetti sauce over the top. Finish by sprinkling the mozzarella, cheddar and parmesan cheeses over everything.
  7. Bake the dish uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
