5 Spice Shrimp
This quick shrimp dish is ideal as a starter or appetiser. The prawns are coated in fragrant five-spice powder and pan-fried with garlic before being finished with a splash of white wine. It's a simple yet impressive recipe that comes together in under 15 minutes, making it perfect for a speedy yet special meal. The five-spice powder, now widely available, adds a distinctive depth of flavour.
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb medium shrimp, deveined,tail left on
- 2 teaspoons five-spice powder (I use more)
- salt and pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove minced garlic (I use more)
- 1/4 cup dry white wine
Method
- Dry the shrimp with a paper towel, then coat them in the five-spice powder along with salt and pepper.
- Place a pan on the cooker, add the olive oil and allow it to get hot.
- Put the coated shrimp into the pan and cook, moving them around, until they curl up and become pink, which takes 1-2 minutes.
- Stir the minced garlic into the pan and continue cooking for another 30 seconds.
- Pour in the dry white wine and let it bubble until the liquid has reduced by half and the shrimp are fully opaque, about 1 minute.
- Dish up the shrimp while they are still warm.
