5 Layered Lasagna
This classic Italian meat lasagna is a comforting family favourite, featuring five distinct layers of pasta, a rich beef and onion sauce, and a blend of three cheeses. It is a straightforward recipe that yields impressive results, perfect for feeding a crowd. The total preparation and cooking time is approximately 50 minutes.
Ingredients
- 0.5 (500 g) package lasagna noodles (15 noodles)
- 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
- 1 medium chopped onion
- 1 (680 ml) can of hunts italian onion herbs and spices spaghetti sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon parsley
- 500 g cottage cheese
- 500 g mozzarella cheese, shredded (1 pkg)
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon parsley
Method
- Cook the lasagna noodles in boiling water until they are soft.
- In a large frying pan, cook the ground beef and chopped onion for 10 minutes or until fully cooked.
- Stir in the spaghetti sauce, Italian seasoning, and 1 tablespoon of parsley, then let it simmer for 5 minute.
- Drain the cooked noodles and rinse them with cold water to make handling easier.
- Lightly grease a 9 X 13 inch baking pan.
- Place three noodles side by side to form the first layer on the pan bottom.
- Spread half of the prepared meat sauce evenly over this noodle layer.
- Arrange another three noodles on top to create the second layer.
- Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese over these noodles.
- Add a third layer using three more noodles.
- Spread all of the cottage cheese over this noodle layer.
- Place three more noodles to form the fourth layer.
- Cover this layer with the remaining meat sauce.
- Finish with a final layer of three noodles.
- Top with the rest of the mozzarella, the cheddar cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon of parsley.
- Bake at 400 F for 10 minute until the cheese on top has melted.
