5-Bean Baked Beans
This robust casserole combines lima beans, garbanzo beans, Bush's beans, chilli or pinto beans, and ground beef with a sweet and savoury sauce. Onions and garlic are sautéed in bacon drippings, then everything is baked together until the flavours meld into a rich, comforting dish ideal for gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb bacon
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained
- 1 (16 ounce) can bush beans
- 1 (15 ounce) can chili or 1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans
- 1 lb ground beef, browned
- 1/3 cup vinegar
- 1/2 cup chili sauce
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 cloves garlic
Method
- Cook the bacon until crisp and set aside one tablespoon of the rendered fat.
- Cook the chopped onions in the reserved bacon fat until they become soft and clear.
- Combine the cooked onions, crumbled bacon, and all other listed ingredients in a large casserole dish.
- Place the dish in an oven preheated to 325 degrees and bake for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
