This visually impressive trifle is a showstopping dessert ideal for patriotic celebrations. A creamy mixture of cream cheese, sour cream and whipped cream is folded with pieces of angel food cake. It is layered with fresh strawberries and blueberries that have been macerated with sugar and almond flavouring. Served in a clear glass bowl to showcase the colourful layers, it requires refrigeration for a couple of hours before serving. Peaches can also be used as a variation.

4th of July Trifle

Ingredients

  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond flavoring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 pint whipping cream
  • 1 angel food cake (store bought is fine)
  • 1 quart strawberry
  • 1 quart blueberries
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons almond flavoring

Method

  1. Blend the cream cheese with the confectioners' sugar until creamy.
  2. Incorporate the sour cream, vanilla and 1/4 tsp almond flavoring into the cheese mixture.
  3. Set this prepared cream cheese blend aside for now.
  4. Whip the whipping cream in another bowl, then fold it into the reserved cream cheese mixture.
  5. Tear the angel food cake into pieces and gently fold them into the combined cream mixture.
  6. In separate bowls, combine the strawberries and blueberries with the 3/4 cup sugar and 3 Tbsp almond flavoring.
  7. You may mix the berries together or keep them apart for a distinct red, white and blue presentation. if separate, divide the sugar and almond flavoring between the two bowls.
  8. Create layers in a clear glass bowl, alternating between the cream cheese mixture and the prepared berries.
  9. Decorate the top of the trifle with some of the berries.
  10. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.
  11. The finished trifle is as delightful to eat as it is beautiful to look at.
  12. Peaches also work really well as an alternative fruit in this recipe.
