4-Ingredient Hardtack
Hardtack is a durable, cracker-like food with a fascinating history, famously used as army rations during the American Civil War. This simple version requires only four basic ingredients. It creates a very firm biscuit that stores for an exceptionally long time, making it an ideal nonperishable snack for outdoor activities or an educational history project. The process involves making a simple dough, shaping it, and baking until completely dry.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 cups unbleached white flour
- 1/2-1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups water
Method
- Combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.
- Slowly pour in the water while stirring to form a dough, then knead the mixture in the bowl for 5 minutes.
- Allow the dough to sit undisturbed for 10 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to a greased baking sheet and roll it out to a 1/2 inch thickness. Mark it into sections with 3 inch intervals and prick the surface all over with a fork.
- Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Once baked, break the sheet into pieces along the scored lines and leave them to cool on a rack.
