4-Ingredient Fruit Crisp
This straightforward dessert requires only four basic ingredients. You can prepare it with your choice of fruit, such as apples or mixed berries. The method involves creating a sweet, buttery crumble topping that bakes over the fruit. It results in a warm, comforting pudding ideal for sharing. The whole dish comes together in about 45 minutes, including baking time. Leftovers keep well when stored properly.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lbs fruit (apples or berries work well)
- 7/8 cup demerara sugar, divided
- 1 1/4 cups flour, divided
- 8 tablespoons butter, softened, cut into pieces
Method
- Heat your oven to 375*F. Prepare your chosen fruit by slicing larger varieties and leaving smaller ones whole. Combine the fruit with 1/4 cup flour and 3/8 cup sugar, then transfer the mixture to a deep 9" x 13" x 2" baking dish.
- To make the crumble, place 1 cup flour and 1/2 cup sugar into a food processor. Add the softened butter pieces and pulse the mixture until it forms coarse crumbs, with the largest being 2-3 inches. Switch off the processor and use your hands to break any big clumps into pieces ranging from 1/4-inch to 1-inch. A fork can be used if you lack a processor.
- Scatter the crumbly topping evenly over the fruit layer and bake. For berries or soft fruit, bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes. For apples or firm fruit, first bake covered with foil for 20 minutes until the fruit softens, then add the topping and bake uncovered for a further 30-40 minutes.
- The crisp is ready when the fruit is tender and the topping is golden brown. Allow it to cool for about 15 minutes before serving warm. You can store any leftovers, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
