3BC Baked Bean Casserole
This popular baked bean casserole is a staple for American gatherings, offering a rich, smokey-sweet flavour that complements any main course. It combines canned baked beans with crispy bacon, sautéed onion, and a tangy sauce, all baked until bubbling. Ideal as a side dish for six people, it requires just 70 minutes of total preparation and cooking time.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, diced
- 0.5 pound bacon
- 1 (28 ounce) can baked beans (such as Bush's Original®)
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
- 1 cup brown sugar, divided
Method
- Set your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) to preheat.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the diced onion and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until soft. Move the onion to a 2-quart casserole dish. In the same skillet, cook the bacon for about 10 minutes until browned. Drain it, then cut into pieces.
- In the casserole dish, mix together the baked beans, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Add 2/3 of the bacon and 1/4 of the brown sugar, stirring to combine. Layer the rest of the bacon on top and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar.
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes until the casserole is hot and bubbly.
