This straightforward baked ziti is an American main course that serves six. It involves creating a herby tomato sauce with onion and garlic, boiling ziti pasta until al dente, then combining everything before baking with a topping of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese until melted and golden. The entire process takes just 45 minutes from start to finish.

3 Step Baked Ziti

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, lightly crushed with the side of a knife blade, and minced
  • 1 can crushed red tomatoes in puree
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves, plus about 6 small sprigs for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • Salt
  • 1 pound dried ziti pasta
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan

Method

  1. Warm the canola oil in a saute pan, then cook the diced onion and minced garlic until the onion is translucent. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, then add the parsley, basil, and Italian seasoning. Put a lid on the pan and allow the sauce to simmer for about 25 minutes.
  2. Set your oven to heat to 160°C. In a separate pot, bring water to a boil, season it with salt, and cook the dried ziti pasta until it is al dente, which should take about 10 minutes.
  3. Once drained, mix the cooked pasta into the pot containing the prepared sauce. Move this combination into a baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top. Place the dish in the oven and bake until the cheese has fully melted.
