3 Bean Hot Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 1/2 lb bacon
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (15 1/2 ounce) can butter beans
  • 1 (15 1/2 ounce) can kidney beans
  • 1 (20 ounce) can baked beans (Bush's)

Method

  1. Cook the bacon until browned, then set it aside to cool. You can optionally reserve some of the bacon fat to cook with the beef.
  2. Once cooled, break or cut the bacon into small, bite sized pieces.
  3. While the bacon cools, brown the hamburger with the chopped onion and pepper in a pan, then drain off any excess fat.
  4. Add the prepared bacon pieces, and any saved bacon fat, to the cooked beef mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar and salt.
  6. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan with the beef and bacon, stirring well to combine.
  7. Add all the canned beans to the pan and stir everything together until evenly mixed.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Alternatively, cook it in a crock pot on high for about 3-4 hours.
  9. This dish freezes well for future meals. You can also adapt it by using different bean varieties or adjusting the quantities of beef and beans to suit your needs.
  10. Serve the hot dish and enjoy.
