The dish is versatile, as it can be prepared in the oven or a slow cooker, making it a popular choice for gatherings and potlucks. It yields 6 to 8 servings and takes about 90 minutes from start to finish.
Ingredients
- 1 lb hamburger
- 1/2 lb bacon
- 1/2 cup onion, chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 (15 1/2 ounce) can butter beans
- 1 (15 1/2 ounce) can kidney beans
- 1 (20 ounce) can baked beans (Bush's)
Method
- Cook the bacon until browned, then set it aside to cool. You can optionally reserve some of the bacon fat to cook with the beef.
- Once cooled, break or cut the bacon into small, bite sized pieces.
- While the bacon cools, brown the hamburger with the chopped onion and pepper in a pan, then drain off any excess fat.
- Add the prepared bacon pieces, and any saved bacon fat, to the cooked beef mixture.
- In a separate bowl, combine the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar and salt.
- Pour this sauce mixture into the pan with the beef and bacon, stirring well to combine.
- Add all the canned beans to the pan and stir everything together until evenly mixed.
- Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Alternatively, cook it in a crock pot on high for about 3-4 hours.
- This dish freezes well for future meals. You can also adapt it by using different bean varieties or adjusting the quantities of beef and beans to suit your needs.
- Serve the hot dish and enjoy.
