This classic layered salad is assembled in a dish and left to chill overnight, allowing the flavours to develop. It features a base of lettuce topped with a mixture of celery, onions, peppers and thawed peas. A creamy dressing made from mayonnaise, sour cream and sugar is spread over the vegetables, followed by a layer of grated cheddar cheese and crumbled cooked bacon. It is served with chopped tomato if you like.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of lettuce
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper
  • 10 ounces frozen peas
  • 8 ounces grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup celery
  • 1 bunch green onion
  • 1 lb bacon
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 chopped tomatoes, if desired

Method

  1. Place a layer of lettuce in the base of a 9/13 dish.
  2. Chop the celery, onions and peppers, then mix them together and scatter over the lettuce.
  3. Add the thawed peas on top of the vegetable mixture.
  4. Combine the mayonnaise, sour cream and sugar in a bowl.
  5. Spread this creamy mixture over the layered vegetables, sealing the edges.
  6. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Cook the bacon until crisp, then crumble it and scatter it over the cheese.
  8. Place the salad in the refrigerator to chill over night.
  9. Add chopped tomato on top just before serving, if desired.
