24 Hour Salad
This classic layered salad is assembled in a dish and left to chill overnight, allowing the flavours to develop. It features a base of lettuce topped with a mixture of celery, onions, peppers and thawed peas. A creamy dressing made from mayonnaise, sour cream and sugar is spread over the vegetables, followed by a layer of grated cheddar cheese and crumbled cooked bacon. It is served with chopped tomato if you like.
Ingredients
- 1 medium head of lettuce
- 1/2 cup bell pepper
- 10 ounces frozen peas
- 8 ounces grated cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup celery
- 1 bunch green onion
- 1 lb bacon
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 chopped tomatoes, if desired
Method
- Place a layer of lettuce in the base of a 9/13 dish.
- Chop the celery, onions and peppers, then mix them together and scatter over the lettuce.
- Add the thawed peas on top of the vegetable mixture.
- Combine the mayonnaise, sour cream and sugar in a bowl.
- Spread this creamy mixture over the layered vegetables, sealing the edges.
- Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- Cook the bacon until crisp, then crumble it and scatter it over the cheese.
- Place the salad in the refrigerator to chill over night.
- Add chopped tomato on top just before serving, if desired.
