22 Minute Cake
This cherished family recipe yields a dessert that blends the texture of a cake with the richness of a fudgy brownie, reminiscent of a Texas sheet cake. It comes together quickly without a mixer and is topped with a warm, nutty icing. The whole process, from mixing to serving, takes only 37 minutes. Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 lb powdered sugar
- 1 cup chopped nuts
Method
- Do not use a mixer for this recipe.
- Place the flour and sugar together in a large mixing bowl.
- Put the butter, water, shortening, cocoa and salt into a saucepan.
- Heat the saucepan contents until they reach a boil.
- Transfer the hot liquid mixture into the bowl with the flour and sugar.
- In a separate container, mix the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, vanilla and cinnamon.
- Add this buttermilk mixture to the large bowl and stir everything together until combined. the batter may be slightly lumpy.
- Transfer the batter into a greased 9 x 12 inch baking pan.
- Place the pan in an oven preheated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 22 minutes.
- When the cake has been baking for 18 minutes, begin making the icing. Combine the 1/2 cup butter, 4 tablespoons cocoa, and 1/3 cup milk in a large bowl.
- Bring this icing mixture to a boil and, while it is boiling, stir in the 1 pound of powdered sugar and 1 cup of chopped nuts. Keep the mixture on the heat while adding the sugar.
- As soon as the cake is taken out of the oven, pour the hot icing evenly over the top.
