15 Dollar/Week Dog Food

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups dried black beans
  • 1 1/2 cups dried red kidney beans
  • 1 (16 ounce) can sweet potatoes
  • 3 cups dry lentils
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 lbs chicken gizzards
  • 2 1/2 cups brown rice
  • 2 1/2 cups white rice
  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 lb frozen spinach
  • 1/2 lb frozen carrots
  • 1/2 lb frozen peas
  • 2 cups blackstrap molasses
  • 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup flax seed
  • 3 cups powdered milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup soybean oil

Method

  1. Cook the dried black beans, red kidney beans, brown rice and white rice until they become tender. This can be done in a slow cooker with sufficient water for 4-5 hours without pre-soaking.
  2. Process the chicken gizzards into small pieces using a food processor.
  3. Heat the soybean oil in a large stock pot. Cook the minced gizzards and ground turkey until fully done.
  4. Introduce the dry lentils and oats to the pot with around 4 cups of water. Allow this to cook until the lentils soften, which takes about 15 minutes.
  5. Incorporate all the remaining ingredients, including the canned sweet potatoes, frozen vegetables, molasses, tomato paste, flax seed, powdered milk and banana. Warm everything until the vegetables are hot.
  6. Combine the cooked beans and rice with the meat and vegetable mixture. Transfer to a large container for refrigeration or portion into smaller containers for freezing.
