10-minute mincemeat
Prepare a homemade Christmas mincemeat in only 10 minutes. This versatile mixture is ideal for filling traditional mince pies, but also works wonderfully in Chelsea buns or sweet samosas. It makes a thoughtful homemade gift when presented in jars. The recipe yields 1 kg, which is enough to fill two 500ml jars. The mincemeat can be stored unopened in the fridge for up to three months or frozen for six months.
Ingredients
- 2 peeled and grated Bramley apples
- 200g light muscovado sugar
- zest and juice of 1 orange
- zest and juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 500g mixed dried fruit
- 50ml brandy
- 100g grated unsalted butter or shredded suet
- 1/2 tbsp ground almonds
Method
- Combine the grated Bramley apples, light muscovado sugar, and the orange and lemon zest and juice in a large bowl.
- Add the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, allspice, mixed dried fruit, and brandy to the bowl.
- Stir in the grated unsalted butter or shredded suet along with the ground almonds until everything is well mixed.
- Spoon the finished mincemeat into jars or other suitable containers for storage.
- Store the unopened jars in the fridge for up to three months, or keep them in the freezer for up to six months.
