10 Minute Chinese 5 Spice Tofu
This quick Chinese 5 spice tofu is ready in just 11 minutes, making it an ideal healthy lunch or snack. The dish uses agave syrup instead of sugar for a lower glycaemic load. It pairs wonderfully with steamed or stir-fried vegetables for a complete and nutritious meal. The method involves pan-frying firm tofu until golden, then coating it in a fragrant sauce of sesame oil, soy sauce, and five spice powder.
Ingredients
- 1 cup firm organic tofu
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoons sesame seed oil
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
- 2 teaspoons agave syrup
- sesame seeds, for sprinkling over finished dish
Method
- Cut the firm tofu into slices roughly 1 inch thick and pat them dry with kitchen paper. Warm the olive oil in a frying pan, place the tofu in the pan and fry for about 10 minutes, turning until both sides are golden brown.
- Mix the sesame seed oil, soy sauce and Chinese five spice powder together in a bowl. Add the warm tofu to the bowl and toss to coat. Stir through the sesame seeds, then finish by drizzling the agave syrup over the tofu and scattering a few extra sesame seeds on top.
