Spicy Sweet Honey Chili
This one dish meal delivers a wonderful harmony of sweet and spicy flavours. Ground beef is browned with aromatics, then simmered with tomatoes, chili beans, jalapeños, and a unique blend of spices. A generous pour of honey adds a distinctive sweetness. It is a hearty meal that serves six to eight people and is ready in about 50 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 cup chopped sweet onion (Vidalia)
- 1 chopped garlic clove
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 1/2 diced jalapeno peppers
- 2 (15 ounce) cans chili beans
- 1 (14 1/2 ounce) can of petite diced tomatoes
- 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Accent seasoning, flavor enhancer
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3-1/2 cup honey
Method
- Crumble the ground beef into a large pan, adding the Accent seasoning if you are using it.
- Cook the beef until it is browned all over.
- Stir in the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic clove.
- Continue cooking until the onion has softened and turned translucent, then drain away any excess oil.
- Pour in the canned tomatoes, diced jalapeño peppers, chili beans, chili powder, cumin, thyme, salt, and cinnamon.
- Give everything a good stir and let it simmer gently for at least 25 minutes.
- Add the honey to the pan and stir it through thoroughly.
- You can enjoy this chili on its own, spooned over rice, or served with spaghetti.
- For serving, topping it with cheese and having crackers on the side is highly recommended.
- It also pairs wonderfully with a side of cornbread.
